Wait, I can’t find a battery that fits with my pipe work, bloody pipes. Oh, crap I don’t have any batteries for my shields, ok I will haul a little less freight. Ok I will swap out some parts for engines. As I am building my ship, I start thinking things like ‘What if I encounter pirates? I will want some guns, and maybe shields? Oh, crap now I don’t have enough room for more engines. While you are grabbing parts and placing them you have to consider what sort of ship you want to build. If you think too long about a part you could end up missing out on other pieces as your opponents’ snatch up parts greedily like pigeons fighting over an abandoned sandwich. Everyone is grabbing stuff at the same time and it feels quite tense. You rummage through the face down parts finding bits that you need and then place them on your ship. The learning flight board is a great introduction to the game, it’s shorter and less complex than the larger flight boards.īuilding your ship is done simultaneously with everyone else. You collect any money you made at the end of your trip provided your ship survives. First, you have to build your ship in real time and then fly it through space hoping you can survive whatever calamity is thrown at you. In Galaxy Trucker there are two parts to the game. The last thing you need to do is flip all the ship tiles face down in the middle of the table and mix them up a bit so no one knows what each piece is. Once you have selected your desired flight board, you set up the adventure deck and give each player their corresponding ship boards and plastic rockets, then you are almost ready to go. The event deck determines what events are going to happen during your race through space. The larger the flight board, the larger your ship and event deck. Each one requires you to make a slightly different deck of adventure cards. You have a number of choices on how you play Galaxy Trucker, there is a learner’s trek, and three other flight boards of various lengths and difficulty. But they all start face down so you have to search through a lot of parts to find the ones you want. Set Up There are so many ship parts to rummage through to build your ship. Yes, it’s dangerous and yes you are taking all the risks too. If you happen to come back in one piece and have earned more than your fellow truckers you win. Any damage along the way comes out of your pay packet and you get to keep the money you make along the way. Then they want you to use it to haul freight to the outer edges of space. They want you to use sections of sewer pipe, housing units, storage compartments and other things you find lying around to build a space worthy ship. So, here’s what’s on offer from your employer, Corporation Incorporated. I don’t want to leave you in suspense, in short, it’s still great but it can be a little overwhelming for new players. I liked it so much I bought a copy of the updated 2021 version released by publisher Czech Games Edition and now that I have had it for about a year, I feel ready to share my thoughts. ‘Hey do you want to cobble together a ship out of odd parts and haul freight across the galaxy?’ ‘Absolutely!’ I replied without hesitation. A friend of mine recommended I give it a go. Although it’s been around for a while and I had heard great things about it, I didn’t get a chance to try it until Wellycon last year. A little whacky, light hearted and with a sci-fi setting. Designer Vlaad Chvatil’s Galaxy Trucker has been around since 2007 and the theme here is right up my ally. Players earn credits by delivering goods, defeating pirates, having the best looking ship, and reaching their destination before the others.I really love it when games have unique and interesting themes, especially when they are well implemented. The goal is to have the most credits at the end of the game. Of course, that's easier said than done, since many hazards will comically send pieces of your ship, your cargo, and your crew hurling into the depths of space. Once the ships are launched, players will encounter dangerous situations, while vying for financial opportunities-each hoping to gain the most valuable cargo and finish with as much of their ship still intact as possible. In this fast and goofy family game, 2 to 4 players begin by simultaneously rummaging through the common warehouse, frantically trying to grab the most useful component tiles for building their space ship-all in real-time. Load up for an intense, humor-filled haul with Galaxy Trucker. Watch fellow players' ships explode as you fly on to victory! Build a space ship and fly across the Galaxy.
